Theatre in Bali, Indonesia is more than a distinguished discipline; it is a performance entwined with every day life. Theatre, like all art, is a part of the religion and culture in Bali; thus all Balinese participate in art in some way. Furthermore, music, dance, costumes, and drama are not separate entities, but rather pieces of Balinese Theatre that rely on each other to achieve their ultimate purpose: Creating unity and harmony between the three worlds
the intention of the project is to remember.
it is about finding balance. telling a story through architecture
drawing series
. using brodsky + utkin works and geoffrey bawa’s drawings as precedent studies for representation of ideas.
. historically, cathedrals were designed as a tool to tell the stories from the bible - using iconography. the shadow puppets theater are traditionally used to tell the classic Hindu epics of “The Mahabarata” and “The Ramayana” - with the play of light and shadow.
. the drawings are telling the story of the house of two . exploring materiality (light and heavy), qualities of light (light/dark), above/below, inside/outside, intimate/open. its about finding balance through opposite forces (yin and yang), about how we see one image from the two perspectives of our eyes. The core philosophy of Balinese-Hinduism is to maintain the balance of opposite forces.
. there will be 4 sets of drawing series. like a storybook, the exploration through drawing/carving is divided into different chapters :`
1. gates, threshold. the importance of gates in balinese architecture.
2. form, structure, the skeleton of the house.
3. procession, circulation, steps. above/below
4. hearth, spatial qualities. intimate/open.
