…in Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space, where he explores the parallels between attics and the mind and the superego.  The sheds and gables and lanterns which enclose them are more than utilitarian: they top off the house and mediate with the sky.  The basement, Bachelard suggests, is the opposite, with implications of the dark id.
